Visit the camp ahead of time if possible. Many times we help to
set up an orientation visit prior to the summer you intend to send your
child. It is also wise to send a letter and cards 4-6 days prior you your
child's departure so there are comforts from home waiting for your
camper.
Discuss ahead of time what camp will be like and never assure them that
they will be immediately rescued if they don't like it. You may be setting
yourself up for failure if you do this.
Send along a favorite poster, family photo, or stuffed animal to help them feel com-
fortable and feel like they have a piece of home with them. Send nothing that cannot
be replaced.
Send a letter to the child's counselor. Let them know information not necessarily asked
on the camp forms. It also will let the counselors know that you are thanking them in
advance for the special care they will be giving your child.
Please allow the camp staff to work this homesickness out with your
child. Please note that by the time you have received a letter indicating
this feeling of homesickness the problem has usually been resolved.
Insisting on immediate communication with your child usually does more
harm than help. You had the confidence to send your child to this camp,
let the camp professionals work their special magic.
Please send in your question to us by mail or email for us to answer. If
your question is picked for our column we will send you a $100 gift to use
as you please anywhere. You must include your address and phone number
so that we can send you the gift.
