Liz Hockman Mak
Let me introduce myself
I’m Liz Hochman Mak. I live in Port Washington, New York. I am the Camp Expert representing families from Long Island, New York and surrounding areas.
My first bunk
I spent many summers at a sleepaway camp in Wayne County, PA.
From camper to camp expert
I previously worked for many years as a Marketing Manager for Time Inc. and Conde Nast. I am also a Board Member of the HSA/PTA at my son’s school and the Chairperson of several committees. All these jobs and experiences allows me to work with many different people of varying backgrounds and personalities. The organization needed, keen attention to detail, and follow up skills in all these roles allow me to work with all clients and really listen to their needs to find the best fit for their campers.
Ultimate camp highlight
My all time favorite camp activity is Color War! I loved it at day camp and sleep away and some of my fondest camp memories are of the fun and spirit that Color War brings! I see the smiles on my own children’s faces during Color War and it’s the absolute best!
Why I love this job
I love working with families of all backgrounds and needs to find the best camp fit! There are so many options out there and I take so much time listening and spending a great deal of time and effort to understand the needs and wants of each family. What works for one family might not for another and it’s critical to get to know the family and the future camper(s). A big part of my job is not only listening to the needs of my clients but really explaining the process, discussing all camp and summer program options and making sure they understand what options they have so their children have the best opportunity of a terrific and successful summer! I will always repeatedly follow up with all families to make sure they are comfortable with the process and happy with their choices! Visiting camps, speaking to directors, attending zooms and presentations are a critical component to my job ensuring that I’m educated and can find the best fit for all families.
My home bunk
My husband and I have two children, ages 8 and 17. My youngest has spent four amazing summers at day camp and will go to sleepaway camp next summer! My oldest son spent 8 life changing summers at a wonderful camp in the Poconos. It changed his life in so many ways. He gained independence, explored many new activities and adventures, and developed invaluable friendships. He made lifelong relationships with friends and staff from all over the world! His camp friends are some of his very best friends who he is even traveling with internationally this summer! I know he will be friends with these kids forever and it’s been one of the greatest gifts to witness such special friendships and have these kids grow up together and continue to make memories together even after camp! I used to cry each summer when he would head off on the bus to camp and then I began to cry at the end of the summer knowing he was coming home from camp because I knew what a special place camp was and how happy he was there!
